<p>Calibrated to the particular requirements of the vehicle, Allison Prognostics monitor operating parameters to determine and alert when a specific maintenance function is required. Fluid, filters and transmission health status can be monitored simply by consulting the shift selector display.</p>
<p>Eliminating the guesswork and hassle of scheduling routine vehicle maintenance as well as unnecessary oil and filters changes, Allison Prognostics save time and money while providing maximum protection for the transmission.</p>
<p>Through Allison Transmission’s experience working with defense customers, its experts have developed a wide library of ‘mission profiles’ – the best configurations by application – and a clear understanding of the factors which affect both vehicle performance and fuel consumption.</p>

The GMK6300L is capable of lifting 300 tons and features a main boom that can extend 80 metres. For further operating distance a 37 metre boom extension is also available. The lifting capacity of 12 tons at 80m simplifies tasks such as tower crane erection, placing air conditioning units and elevator equipment on high rise buildings or chimney work.</p>
<p>The crane is powered by a Mercedes OM 502 LA engine seamlessly matched to the six-speed Allison fully automatic transmission 4500 SP. Power for the crane boom comes from a separate Mercedes OM 926 LA engine.</p>
<p>“The GMK 6300L is the only one in its class which has a fully automatic transmission offering the best driveability on site,” Michael W. Preikschas, Grove’s senior regional product manager for all-terrain cranes in EMEA told Tachoblog. “The Allison 4500 SP is a strong, reliable and cost effective drivetrain solution. Its capabilities are proven even in the most arduous conditions and the electronic controls allow it to adapt to its surroundings and provide self-diagnostics for easier maintenance. An integral retarder offers enhanced braking on hills and greater safety for the operator when moving a heavy vehicle.”<br />
Combined with Grove’s Megatrak suspension system, the Allison transmission offers excellent manoeuvrability even in the most narrow lift conditions that face operators on construction sites. Now firmly established in the crane market for many years, Allison transmissions are equally valued by crane operators and drivers thanks also to their high reliability and ease of use.</p>
<p>The latest crane continues an extensive partnership between Grove and Allison; Grove offers Allison fully automatic transmissions across its range including in the GMK5170, GMK5220, GMK6220L, GMK6300 and GMK7450 models.</p>

<p>Visitors Allison&#8217;s Stand (hall A4, booth 414)at Bauma 2010 (19 – 25 April, New Munich Trade Fair Center) will be the first to see Allison Transmission’s latest Off-Highway Series model – the  6620 – as well as upgrades to the versatile 4000 Series transmission that is so popular to the construction market.</p>

<p>The new Allison 6620 transmission builds on the proven rock solid performance, reliability and durability of the existing 6610 model (which it replaces) with improvements to the lock-up clutch, turbine shaft, turbine hub and flywheel, all designed to improve maintenance costs and reduce downtime.</p>
<p>The 4000 Series has been upgraded with an optional provision for a ground-driven pump, to ease the installation of the emergency steering system, a requirement for most European 8&#215;4 tippers.  Allison now also offers a 2nd ‘deep reverse’ gear in addition to the standard reverse gear – exclusively available on 4700 and 4800 Series – seven speed models.  The 4000 Series six and seven speed transmission range is available with close and wide gear ratios and is popular in construction applications and articulated dump trucks as well as oilfield and crane applications.</p>
<p>Also on show at Bauma is a new Allison-equipped Grove GMK6300L crane (Manitowoc booth, open-air ground F10, booth 1002/6) and a new Mercedes-Benz Zetros multipurpose vehicle with an Allison 3000 Series transmission (Mercedes-Benz booth, Hall B4, booth 102/204).</p>

<p>No, this isn&#8217;t a lucky escape travel story, but news that the introduction of a new engine and the latest fully automatic transmission technology has seen a military vehicle produced by Engesa that was a success in the 80s and 90s back in front line action.</p>

<p>Considered by many to be out of action – as the last units were, for many years, parked in the battalion storage of the Brazilian Army – the armoured Engesa EE-11 Urutu may yet be ready for service again.</p>

<p><span id="more-7056"></span>Destined for troop transportation, the EE-11 despite weighing 13 tons, is a highly capable amphibious vehicle. Together with its carrying capacity, these features made the Urutu very popular among many national armies in South America. With a new powertrain, it is set to strike again.</p>
<p>Its name was taken from the venomous Urutu snake, from the family of Veperidae, the same as the rattlesnake, the bushmaster and Jararaca – the three feared reptiles of the South American forests. The Urutu’s attributes and importance to the Brazilian Army led the local force to decide to reactivate 226 units and more than 600 armoured Cascavel (or rattlesnake) vehicles. All of those were mothballed and in storage. With a very old-fashioned powertrain, and a mix of manual and automatic gearboxes, Urutu and Cascavel had a sizeable technological disadvantage during operations. The Brazilian Army believed that by updating the powertrain of their armoured vehicles, they could keep them running for the next 15 years. That claim was validated after a rigorous evaluation made with a prototype produced by those involved in the project.</p>
<p>For the first prototype the existing Mercedes-Benz OM 352 engine was replaced by a militarized OM 366 LA, increasing the power output from 158hp to 230hp. Coupled to the Engesa transfer box, the original Mercedes G3-36 gearbox was changed for an up to date Allison 3000SP automatic transmission, with electronic controls. The initial tests on light terrain saw the prototype reach a top speed of 110km/h. Over heavier off-road situations, the vehicle could travel at 80km/h. Crucially, the range was increased from 750km to 950km.</p>

According to Glauco Bueno da Silva, general manager for Engemotors, one of the reasons for using Allison’s automatic gearboxes on all the Urutu and Cascavel units is the improved drivability.  Glauco told Tachoblog, “In a combat vehicle during battle, it is difficult for the driver to focus on the gear change coordination, clutch usage, choosing the best gear for each situation and so on. With an automatic transmission the driver is free from such distractions and so they can concentrate on the mission. The Allison 3000SP gearbox we now use is more resistant and delivered very interesting results during the tests. The performance is superior to old versions equipped with manual/automatic transmissions as that older transmission generation, when used in the Urutu, had no electronic management and lacked many updates which help vehicles to have better serviceability”.</p>

<p>The city has placed Spain’s largest ever order for CNG trucks and all of the 300 natural gas vehicles, which will work for the environmental services department carrying out duties such as refuse collection and street cleaning, are fitted with Allison fully automatic transmissions. The public sector in Spain is increasingly opting for CNG vehicles due to their lower carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide emissions.</p>

<p><span id="more-6941"></span>The new CNG vehicles form part of a 350-strong truck order to be managed by environmental service providers Cespa, CLD, FCC and Urbaser. Each company chose Allison to reduce operating costs, improve fuel consumption and optimise service to the citizens of Barcelona, and not just for the CNG-fuelled vehicles. Allison equips almost 85 percent of the order’s total heavy truck requirement, including diesel vehicles.</p>
<p>More than 50 different vehicle configurations have been developed for this large fleet, including various bodywork applications and facilities for rear, left or right side loading and vertical loading by automatic crane. The vehicles are extremely diverse in both size and capacity. Ranging from three to 32 tonnes, the fleet includes street cleaning trucks, large and small refuse trucks and service vehicles which collect loads from small refuse trucks at isolated points of the city in order to reduce trips to landfill.</p>

<p>The common denominator in this dazzling array of vehicles and equipment is the Allison automatic transmission. The 2500, 3000R and 3200R Series transmissions were chosen for their reliability, cost efficiency and driving convenience. Each Allison comes with a torque converter as standard for powertrain protection and superior performance.</p>
<p>This is an essential feature in tough applications, such as waste collection, with constant stops and starts, very often with heavily laden vehicles, and it can deliver high productivity, more efficient fuel consumption and significant cost reductions.</p>
<p>The incorporation of fourth generation electronic controls in each Allison transmission results in smooth and faster gear changes, greater fuel efficiency and enhanced powertrain reliability. Allison transmissions have hydraulic retarders, which afford greater driver control of the vehicle. This improves safety and minimises wear on brakes particularly in vehicles equipped with a CNG engine.</p>
<p>There are also clear maintenance advantages to owning and running an Allison transmission which translate into shorter downtime and greater productivity. Because the automatic transmission does not have a starting clutch, it eliminates repair work and makes life easier for fleet maintenance managers. Most of the companies involved in the Barcelona contract are currently preparing their preventive maintenance plans in cooperation with Allison. Maintenance costs will be minimised through the use of the synthetic oil, TranSynd (TES-295), which increases intervals between oil changes six-fold.</p>
<p>Allison automatic transmissions make driving easier by facilitating manoeuvrability and eliminating repetitive clutch depressions and gear-change movements. This reduces stress and fatigue, allowing drivers to focus entirely on waste collection and traffic conditions and preventing typical muscular ailments.</p>
<p>Finally, the city benefits from the use of these automatic transmissions. The Allison’s quiet helical gears, along with the fact that transmission and engine are calibrated to operate within optimal RPM parameters, means noise normally associated with manual transmission trucks, is significantly reduced.</p>

<p>Designated the FE Low Entry Cab (LEC), the new truck is aimed at the waste collection and recycling sector – in particular, the carriage of domestic refuse delivered direct to a bulk transfer or recycling station.</p>

<p><span id="more-6432"></span>In addition to municipal applications, the FE LEC is also designed to meet the need for ease of access of crews of specialist fire, airport and highways vehicles &#8211; particularly those working ‘stop-start’ duty cycles such as cone trucks in roadworks.</p>
<p>The Volvo FE LEC is configured around a 26 tonne GVW 6&#215;2 rear-steer, tag-axle rigid chassis. Chassis layout is conventional and is available with the standard cab. Ninety five per cent of components are from the standard FE chassis – including key components such as mirrors, windscreen and cab panels.</p>
<p>The radiator, intercooler and steering box are also from the standard FE. Should the worst happen, cab and chassis parts are available throughout the Volvo Dealer Network.</p>
<p>The FE LEC is designed to cater for four crew (three crew plus driver) in comfort while providing easy entry and exit. The driver’s side of the cab features single step entry and the flat floor of the cab allows excellent cross cab access unimpeded by obstructions. This means the driver can also exit on the nearside – an important Health and Safety consideration.</p>

<p>The FE LEC cab is mounted 600mm further forward and 200mm lower than the standard FE. Crew entry and exit on the near-side is via a wide, low access step at a height of 550mm. Front air suspension gives the option of a kneeling function, when the doors are opened, for even lower step entry of only 440mm. Both cab doors feature wide apertures and open to a full 90º.  The air suspension for both front and rear of the truck can be operated from a tethered handset controller located by the driver’s seat.</p>
<p>Seats are covered in easy to clean vinyl and the crew sit at the same level for excellent forward vision through the deep windscreen. The nearside crew seat is set back to aid driver visibility and there are windows in the lower passenger door and passenger cab side panel. Three point diagonal safety belts are fitted to all four seats.</p>
<p>With an overall width over the doors of only 2,300mm, easy to replace plastic mudwings, and a three piece bumper with steel corners, the FE LEC is designed to take the knocks and scrapes of urban life.</p>
<p>Cab equipment includes manually operated air conditioning, power windows, heated mirrors and additional storage for wet gear behind the driver’s seat.</p>

<p>The AL306 features a live drive PTO. Rear axle ratio is 6.17:1 and the FE LEC can keep pace with city traffic at 26 tonnes GVW and also cope with the stop start demands of waste collection. Disc brakes feature the latest generation electronically controlled EBS.</p>
<p>The FE LEC offers operators a competitive unladen weight of 7,500kg +/- 1.5% (includes 215 litres of fuel, 70 litres of Adblue and no driver). In terms of axle capacity, the FE LEC offers 1,000kg of loading tolerance at 26 tonnes with an 8 tonne front axle and a 19 tonne rear bogie. The rear bogie is air suspended and chassis ride height is 1,000mm. The front axle is also available with air suspension (with the option of a kneeling function). 315/80R22.5 tyres aid axle capacity and provide increased ground clearance.</p>

<p>Every second can count in the daily routine of a fire brigade, and emergency vehicles need to accelerate and brake fast to get quickly and safely through congested city traffic. The Munich fire brigade specified vehicles with a fully automatic transmission and integrated retarder having undertaken extensive tests to compare the performance of a fire truck with an automated manual transmission (AMT) and one with a fully automatic transmission.</p>

<p>The conclusion was that the behaviour of the AMT during shifting and acceleration was unfavourable, while Allison’s torque converter provided continuous powershifting to the wheels without interruption of traction to enable smooth startability and fast acceleration. Keeping vehicles in close group formation is easier with fully automatic transmissions and its integrated retarder provides additional vehicle braking while extending service brake life.</p>
<p>The Allison-equipped Mercedes-Benz Atego 1429Fs feature bodywork by Iveco-Magirus fire protection engineering creating a package that not only meets all the necessary challenging demands but is also the most economically advantageous.</p>
<p>“We are exceptionally glad that the Munich fire brigade will benefit from the numerous advantages of owning an Allison in so many new vehicles,” Gerhard Voigt, OEM account manager at Allison Transmission in Germany told Tachoblog. “The outstanding reliability and durability of Allison transmissions result in less downtime, only minor maintenance requirements and thus reduced maintenance and repair costs.”</p>
<p>The first two vehicles have recently gone into service. The remaining 56 Ategos will be delivered to the Munich fire brigade between now and mid-2011 in four deliveries where they replace old fire engines. Thirty-two trucks are destined for the municipal fire brigade and 26 to the auxiliary fire brigade.</p>
<p>Munich’s fire brigade has more than 420 emergency vehicles, trailer, swap bodies and settling tanks. Approximately 1.650 people work at the ten fire stations and nine emergency doctor stations. In 2008 the vehicles responded to 61,430 calls for assistance of which 4,070 were fire fighting runs and 17,811 were for rescue duties.</p>

<p><span id="more-6274"></span>This most robust of trucks has a 375 HP DF Cummins ISLe engine which, for the first time as a one-off special application, is equipped with an Allison six-speed 4430 fully automatic transmission. Chinese DONGFENG trucks are well known to Russian transport workers and management at Intekra believe they could prove as popular to more vocations such as oil and gas, hence the ambitious test to showcase the DONGFENG/Allison combination at presentations in 13 cities along the route.</p>

<p>As part of an ongoing product optimisation initiative, Allison Transmission is introducing a 2nd Reverse gear on all Allison 4700 and 4800 models for the 2010 model year.</p>
<p>This new feature offers a second ‘deep reverse’ in addition to the standard reverse to provide greater control and engine braking during operation on steep grades. 2nd Reverse will also enable increased manoeuvrability when operating in confined spaces, allowing quicker operation cycles and thereby boosting productivity performance.</p>

<p><span id="more-6104"></span>“Customers in construction and mining in particular, will appreciate the provision of a deeper reverse gear,” Larry Love, Allison Executive Director of International Marketing told Tachoblog.  “The shorter ratios of 2nd Reverse will make up and downhill reversing much safer and easier in heavy duty applications, giving drivers additional confidence. This is another reason to specify an Allison fully automatic transmission, complementing features such as our adaptive Electronic Control Systems and integral retarder that aim to improve comfort and productivity for drivers and operators.”</p>
<p>When a vehicle is in 2nd Reverse, it will have a slow creep capability with high engine speeds. With a mechanical ratio of 17.12, it will have an effective torque converter multiplied ratio up to 32.5:1. The new 2nd Reverse feature provides overall better performance and enhanced applicability for a variety of applications. It will be available mid-year 2010.</p>
